En la Universidad de Estrasburgo conoció a Herder, quien lo introdujo a las obras de Shakespeare y a quien ayudó después a crear el movimiento romántico alemán Sturm und Drang. En 1775 Carlos Augusto, heredero del ducado de Sajonia-Weimar, invitó a Goethe a vivir y trabajar en Weimar, que entonces era uno de los centros intelectuales y literarios de Alemania. Allí desarrolló una brillante carrera política que finalmente abandonó para dedicarse a viajar y a escribir. Es uno de mayores exponentes literarios del Romanticismo y para muchos el escritor más importante que han dado las letras alemanas.
