Dan Gowt is the center of the novel, a rural everyman character, who gets thrust into the media spotlight for his "politically incorrect" views, all of which would have been taken for granted by most everyone only a decade or so ago. Dan is a gentle man, but he also embodies the "id" of today's populist moment--the silent rage against the cosmopolitan administrative state, which bloomed fully in the course of the Brexit phenomenon.
