Die drei antiken Kommentare zu Aristoteles' Schrift Über die Seele (De anima) sind deswegen interessant, weil die Kommentatoren als Neuplatoniker die Seele ganz anders definieren als Aristoteles: Für diesen ist die Seele das untrennbare Lebensprinzip des Körpers, für seine Ausleger eine geistige Entität. Der Kommentator Priskian (um 530 n.Chr.) entwickelte aufgrund dieser Herausforderung die detaillierteste antike Theorie des menschlichen Selbstbewusstseins, die hier erstmals rekonstruiert wird.
