En su siempre elegante prosa, discurre sobre diferentes actitudes filosóficas y vitales con que los hombres tratan de alcanzar la felicidad y sortear los embates de la fortuna, y caricaturiza a quienes sobrevaloran y llevan con poca dignidad las afecciones, ya sean las más groseramente corporales como las de un alma antojadiza y caprichosa. Los consejos de Cicerón encuentran en los diálogos de Platón el puerto seguro en el que la razón nos prepara, no importa lo dolorosos y trágicos que sean, para los avatares de nuestro día a día.
