Surgimiento y auge del neokantismo da un nuevo fundamento a la interpretación de la historia de la filosofía de la segunda mitad del siglo XIX. Gracias a su enfoque crítico, el autor destruye mitos, leyendas y mistificaciones, y revisa las fuentes documentales relativas a la cuestión histórica de cómo surgió el neokantismo y qué condujo a su expansión. Hay un seguimiento cuidadoso del desarrollo de la filosofía universitaria, la tradición epistemológica fundada por Tredelenburg y la teoría del conocimiento poskantiana de Schleiermacher hasta el cientificismo neokantiano, sin olvidar las condiciones sociales que hicieron posible el surgimiento de este movimiento en el periodo posterior a la Revolución de Marzo de 1848.
