Synopsis "The Flock Book of Improved Leicester Sheep: Volume 1"

This special re-print edition of the Improved Leicester Sheep Breeders Association's book "The Flock Book of Improved Leicester Sheep, Volume 1" contains contains historical information on Leicester Sheep. The Leicester Longwool is an English breed of sheep. Alternative names for the breed include: Leicester, Bakewell Leicester, Dishley Leicester, English Leicester, Improved Leicester and New Leicester. Leicester Longwool sheep date back to the 1700s, and were found in the Midland counties of England. It was developed by Robert Bakewell, who was the foremost exponent of modern animal-breeding techniques in the selection of livestock. The Leicester Longwool in the 1700s was slow-growing and coarsely boned. They now have been developed to gain weight quickly and are fast-growing. Leicester Longwool was one of the first pure sheep breeds introduced to Australia, having been introduced in 1826. The Leicester Longwool has been used to improve many sheep breeds because of its meaty carcass and heavy fleece. It is one of the few truly pure breeds. Written in 1893, included are registration details of British bred Leicester Sheep flocks in the 1890's, leading rams and ewes, prizewinners of the day, breeder association activities and practical information on Leicester Sheep. A treasure house of information for those interested in the history of the Leicester Sheep. Note: This edition is a perfect facsimile of the original edition and is not set in a modern typeface. As a result, some type characters and images might suffer from slight imperfections or minor shadows in the page background.
