Synopsis "The Officer's Manual: Napoleon's Maxims of War"

Winfield Scott (June 13, 1786 - May 29, 1866) is an American general, diplomat and candidate for the Presidency of the United States. Biography He was born near Petersburg, Virginia. His father was a farmer who participated in the American War of Independence and his mother came from a Virginia family. Both parents died when he was young. Scott studied at the William and Mary College before studying law. He practiced as a lawyer and then enlisted in the War of 1812. He made his mark during the Niagara Campaign during the battles of Chippawa and Lundy's Lane. Severely touched during this last battle he patented major general but can not resume the fight. After the war he translated the works of Napoleon into English. In 1832 Scott replaced John E. Wool as commander of the federal troops in Georgia (United States). He was replaced by Edmund Meredith Shackelford because of his costly management of the Creek and Seminole Wars. He was recalled in 1838 and organized, at the request of President Martin Van Buren, the deportation of the Cherokee nation west of the Mississippi, an operation known as the Trail of Tears. 16,000 of their members are thus transferred in extreme conditions that will be fatal to 4,000 of them RECOMMENDATION. "After refreshing my memory by looking over again 'The Officer's Manual, ' or 'Maxims of Napoleon, ' I think I may safely recommend the republication, in America, of the work in English, as likely to be called for by many officers, regular and volunteer. It contains a circle of maxims, deduced from the highest source of military science and experience, with practical illustrations of the principles taken from the most celebrated campaigns of modern times. The study of the book cannot fail to set all young officers on a course of inquiry and reflection greatly to their improvement. "WINFIELD SCOTT."
