A major point of divergence between proponents of weak and strong sustainability centers on the assumption of unlimited substitutability of man-made capital for natural capital which is an issue that needs to be further investigated based on empirical research. In this book the author applies the concepts of weak and strong sustainability to the case of steel. She identifies those aspects that play a key role in the analysis and operationalization of sustainability in the context of steel. She provides a methodological model for the implementation of the concept of sustainability consisting of a criteria framework as well as a method and tool to monitor and measure progress toward sustainability at the industry level.
