El utilitarismo ha sido considerado como la doctrina moral que subyace al pensamiento liberal tanto en su versión política como en su versión económica. Es innegable que algunos liberales la adoptaron: de John Stuart Mill a Henry Hazlitt. Esa relación ha desatado críticas que señalan al liberalismo como responsable de promover un egoísmo exacerbado e inaceptable en una filosofía acerca de la vida en sociedad. El autor muestra en este trabajo que la unión entre el utilitarismo y el liberalismo ha terminado. Ha terminado por no ser congruente la propuesta utilitarista con el criterio epistemológico desarrollado dentro del liberalismo en la última parte del siglo veinte.
