Du Bois, junto al enfoque postcolonial de críticos como Bill Ashcroft, Gareth Griffiths, Helen Tiffin y Homi Bhabha entre otros, este libro proporciona el marco teórico necesario para analizar las novelas de Easy Rawlins escritas por Walter Mosley desde un punto de vista postcolonial. Mosley se reapropia de las convenciones de la novela detectivesca para representar la sociedad americana de las décadas de 1950 y 1960 desde una perspectiva marginal.
