Ricardo de la Cierva, político e historiador español, nació en Madrid en 1924. Tras doctorarse en ciencias químicas y en filosofía y letras en la Universidad Central, fue jefe del Gabinete de Estudios sobre Historia en el ministerio de Información y Turismo, profesor en la Universidad de Madrid y la Escuela Diplomática, director general de Cultura Popular y presidente del Instituto Nacional del Libro Español (1973-74). Representante en Cortes por Murcia, en 1980 fue ministro de Cultura. Ha cultivado también el periodismo, dentro del cual ha conseguido el premio Mariano de Cavia (1975).

Ricardo de la Cierva y Hoces (Madrid, 1926–2015) was a Spanish historian and politician, noted for his prolific output on the Second Republic, the Civil War, and Francoism. He held doctorates in Chemical Sciences and in Philosophy and Letters, and served as a professor at the universities of Granada and Alcalá de Henares. During the Transition, he was a senator and deputy for Murcia, and held the position of Minister of Culture in 1980 with the Union of the Democratic Centre. Later, he joined the Popular Alliance.

Among his most outstanding works are History of the Spanish Civil War (1969), History of Francoism (1975), Francisco Franco. Historical Biography (1981), The Hopeless Right (1987), and 1939. Agony and Victory (1989). In 1988, he was a finalist for the Planeta Prize with Student of Freedom, the first part of a trilogy about Isabel II. Additionally, he received the Espejo de España Award for 1939. Agony and Victory and the Mariano de Cavia Award in 1975.
