Die Novelle beginnt mit einer sehr ungewöhnlichen Zeitungsannonce, in der eine Dame von vortrefflichem Ruf bekannt machen lässt, dass sie, ohne ihr Wissen, in andre Umstände gekommen sei und dass der Vater sich melden solle. Sie sei entschlossen, ihn zu heiraten. Anschlie end wird rückblickend erzählt, wie es zu dieser Situation gekommen ist...
