La llamada de la selva fue un éxito rotundo que motivó a su autor, ante el clamor popular, a escribir más adelante, en 1906, su otra obra maestra Colmillo Blanco. Su publicación supuso un extraordinario éxito a nivel mundial, especialmente entre los lectores más jóvenes, y su autor se consagró con ella como una de las figuras más populares de la literatura estadounidense. La historia de esta novela de aventuras transcurre en el Territorio del Yukón, en el incipiente Canadá de finales del siglo XIX, durante la célebre Fiebre del oro de Klondike. Se narra en ella la impresionante historia de la domesticación de un perro lobo salvaje, en contraposición a la historia narrada anteriormente en La llamada de la selva, donde un perro doméstico, para poder sobrevivir en los bosques de Alaska, se ve obligado a hacer uso de sus más salvajes instintos.

Jack London (1876-1916), pseudonym of John Griffith Chaney, is one of the great American writers of the early 20th century. His world is inspired by a very subjective interpretation of Nietzsche's philosophy and is built on the principle of survival of the fittest. Born in San Francisco, he was essentially a self-taught child who avidly read the collections of the public library. At seventeen, he embarked on his first schooner, heading to Japan. After several experiences as a sailor and vagabond -which also led to his imprisonment-, London attended Oakland High School and later, the University of California, which he had to leave due to financial problems. Like many, he suffered from gold fever until he finally turned to writing.
