Fernando de Magallanes (1480 - 1521), exiliado portugués en España, convenció al rey Carlos I de lo que parecía un proyecto descabellado: dar la vuelta al mundo del este al oeste. Las crónicas de la época denominaron a este viaje "La gesta más maravillosa de la historia". Esta osada propuesta se convirtió en el referente principal de todas las grandes hazañas posteriores. Zweig relata, con su maestría narrativa, la biografía de este personaje cuya maravillosa aventura comenzó en agosto de 1519, cuando se puso al frente de una expedición compuesta por cinco barcos y 250 hombres, con la intención de explorar los mares y las tierras que separaban Asia de un nuevo continente descubierto unos años antes por Colón: América. Tres años después solo algunos marineros regresaron a puerto haciendo realidad "la gesta más maravillosa" en la historia de la navegación.
