Sigmund Freud, padre del psicoanálisis y uno de los pensadores más destacados, no solo de los siglos XIX y XX, sino de la historia universal, ha representado como nadie la lucha del hombre por entender y dominar su propia mente. Este médico austriaco buscó, hasta sus últimos días, la manera de esclarecer y predecir el comportamiento humano a través del estudio ―sobre todo― de los episodios vividos en la infancia. Muchos de los problemas provocados por nuestro comportamiento hunden sus raíces en lo más profundo de nuestra psique, un lugar inhóspito e intransitado, y esa es la razón que argumenta Freud para afirmar que la única manera eficaz de solucionarlos es mediante la terapia psicoanalítica. En este breve tratado se desarrolla la idea constante de que la cultura (entendida como medida de adoctrinamiento social) nos coarta, nos limita, nos priva de la libertad necesaria para expresarnos tal y como somos instintivamente, tanto a nivel social como individual.

Sigmund Freud (1856-1939) was an Austrian neurologist and the founder of psychoanalysis. His work falls within the genre of psychology and philosophy of mind, revolutionizing the understanding of the unconscious. Among his most influential books are The Interpretation of Dreams (1899), Three Essays on the Theory of Sexuality (1905), and Civilization and Its Discontents (1930). He also wrote The Psychopathology of Everyday Life (1901) and Beyond the Pleasure Principle (1920), fundamental in the evolution of psychoanalytic thought.

Throughout his career, Freud developed key concepts such as the id, the ego, and the superego, in addition to the theory of the Oedipus complex. His ideas influenced multiple disciplines, from literature to modern psychiatry.
