L’exèrcit franquista està a punt de creuar el Llobregat i milers de refugiats marxen cap a França. Entre ells Lluís Companys, que fuig, criticat per molts i abandonat pels seus. L’acompanya Manel Plandiure, un boxejador que li fa d’escorta i que es veu obligat a deixar a Barcelona l’Agnieszka, la seva amant, una prostituta polonesa. Quan els alemanys detenen Companys i l’entreguen a Franco, el Manel torna a Catalunya amb la intenció d’alliberar-lo. No ho aconseguirà, però venjarà la seva mort. 1939. La caiguda de Barcelona és una novel·la sobre la tragèdia col·lectiva de l’exili, sobre el drama d’aquells a qui la guerra va estroncar la vida i la felicitat i sobre els qui no van defallir.
