El camino de la División Española de Voluntarios, también conocida como la División Azul, fue extenso e intrincado, desde la partida del contingente expedicionario, en julio de 1941, hasta su despliegue en el sector de Nóvgorod, al sur de Leningrado, en octubre de 1941. El cruce del río Vóljov supuso el comienzo de unas jornadas repletas de luchas enconadas, de ardor combativo y dramatismo, en las que brilló con luz propia un puñado de soldados españoles.
