The county's name is derived from Colonel John Hardin who served as a Continental Army officer in the American Revolutionary War. Colonel Hardin was one of the first Judges in the Washington County but he would later be killed in the service of his country while acting as a peace emissary to the Shawnee Indian people under the orders of the President, George Washington.Abraham Lincoln may have taken a leaf from Colonel Hardin's life's page by his devotion to public service which would, like Colonel Hardin before him, ultimately cost him his life.
