El problema de la sequera provoca un enfrontament entre el sector tradicionalista i conservador del poble -que és el que compta amb el poder fàctic- i la visió moderna d'un enginyer vingut de la ciutat que compta amb la complicitat de la filla del cacic local. És la lluita ancestral entre la tradició i la modernitat vista des dels paràmetres del Modernisme més regeneracionista i vitalista.L'estudi preliminar i els complements didàctics han anat a cura de Jaume Aulet, professor de literatura catalana contemporània de la Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona.
