Vladimir Nabokov nació en San Petersburgo en el seno de una familia de la aristocracia en 1899, pero su trayectoria familiar primero, y luego sus inquietudes personales, lo llevaron a Alemania, Inglaterra, Francia y Estados Unidos, donde inició una brillante carrera como poeta, novelista, crítico y traductor, a la vez que enseñaba Literatura en varias universidades de prestigio. Entre sus obras de no ficción cabe destacar su autobiografía Habla, memoria (1951) y ensayos literarios como Nikolai Gögol (1944) o sus cursos de literatura europea, sobre el Quijote o sobre la literatura rusa. En 1961 se trasladó a Suiza, donde murió en 1977. En 2009, su hijo Dmitri accedió a la publicación de su novela inacabada, El original de Laura.
