La narración, si bien frecuentemente fantástica, tiene un fondo histórico y erudito. El relato se desarrolla en once capítulos, más o menos entrelazados y, siguiendo criterios valorativos actuales, se la puede considerar novela histórica. No es, ni mucho menos, una novela de buenos y malos, cosa frecuente en las obras literarias de temática similar, sino un digno ejemplo de equilibrio ideológico. Pero el mayor valor del libro es, sin duda, su estilo literario: una enorme fuerza poética, una desbordante fantasía y, en ocasiones, sensacionales manifestaciones de lo que Chateaubriand y Hugo consiguieron: el gran estilo.
