Muy crítico con la sociedad, el autor retrata la agresividad, la codicia, el elitismo, la supremacía del poder y los excesos del materialismo en un texto narrativo descriptivo -quizás de los más elaborados de Ungerer a nivel literario- y unas ilustraciones expresivas, ricas en detalles y colorido, combinando viñetas con recursos gráficos que acentúan el dinamismo del relato.
