En 1986 el autor embarcó como único periodista en la primera expedición científico-pesquera española a la Antártida, aventura que abriría a España las puertas del Tratado antártico. Treinta años después, Valentín carrera regresa a bordo de los buques Sarmiento de Gamboa y hespérides, en la que sería la expedición número 30, auspiciada por el comité polar español. Cinco meses, entre noviembre de 2016 y marzo de 2017, en que cruza seis veces el paso de Drake, y visitó las islas del rey Jorge, decepción, Livingstone, de la media luna y numerosos lugares del continente antártico.
