Nació en 1969 en Amagasaki, cerca de Osaka, y creció en Kagawa en la prefectura de Shikoku. Tras graduarse por la Universidad de Osaka en Literatura, trabajó en el periódico de la prefectura Shikoku Shimbun durante cinco años, ejerciendo en distintas secciones, incluidas las de política, noticias policiales y economía.
