Las cartas de Tarot fueron las primeras que se conocieron y difundieron en el mundo. Aunque nadie conoce con certeza su origen, se piensa que se crearon en el antiguo Egipto. Desde allí, se difundieron en primer lugar por Europa y luego por el resto de los países. Con diversas transformaciones o adaptaciones regionales, y fue así como surgieron la baraja francesa, española, italiana, franco-alemana, etc.

Las cartas primitivas italianas se dividieron en cuatro palos que simbolizan cada uno a una de las diferentes clases sociales: los oros representaban a los mercaderes y artesanos; las copas a los sacerdotes y gobernantes, las espadas a los militares y los bastos a los agricultores y al pueblo en general.
