The present research work is concerned with the comparative and independent effectiveness of Brief Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT-B) and Brief Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT-B) in mild to moderate depressive disorder. A quasiexperimental trial has been adopted to gain an insight into the potential differential effects of two treatment modalities in recovery of depression. The attempt has also been taken to understand the differential underlying mechanisms, if any, between two therapeutic modules. The introductory chapter contains an overview of depression, including the detailing of its diagnostic criteria, its causal and risk factors, its epidemiology and clinical and economic burden owing to depression. Furthermore, the assessment and management approach to depressive disorder with theoretical foundation of Cognitive and Interpersonal Therapy has been given due attention. Along with the rationale for undertaking the present research. The case vignette below is an example how a patient with depression may present to a clinician. 1.1. A Case Vignette Rita (name changed), 37years old married female, graduate, belonging to a nuclear family of Hindu middle class from urban area of Kolkata, India, was reported to have a well-adjusted interpersonal and social functioning before her marriage 10yrs back.
