El endocrinólogo Filip Filipovich Preobraienski, quien confió en encontrar a través de un trasplante de hipófisis el manantial de la eterna juventud con que soñaban sus pacientes, realiza tal experimento en el cuerpop de un perro callejero, al que se injertan las glándulas seminales y la hipófisis de un maleante recién fallecido. El resultado es aterrorizador. La sustitución de la hipófisis no rejuveneció al animal operado, en cambio, produjo en él una total antropomorfización. En pocas semanas el perro se transformó paulatinamente en algo parecido a un hombre. Es este libro una apología brillante, una sátira incisiva.
