Los cuentos del argentino Leopoldo Lugones (1874-1938) son, sobre todo, fantásticos; son relatos en los que el misterio, lo inexplicable, lo mágico incluso, son el eje sobre el que gira todo.  Su prosa es notablemente correcta y armónica, llena de bellas metáforas muy influidas  por el temperamento lírico del autor. Son cuentos coloristas, algunos de los cuales recurren a personajes históricos como Godofredo de Bouillon o Pedro el Ermitaño; otros, como la mariposa, son pura fantasía y otros, como Yzur, son la primera muestra de ficción científica de la literatura argentina.  Lugones es, por lo tanto, una de las figuras literarias más notables que brillaron entre los finales del siglo XIX y los principios del XX.
