Este primer libro de José López Rubio, nunca reeditado, apareció cuando su autor contaba con sólo 21 años. Escrito bajo el magisterio de Gómez de la Serna, está ilustrado por algunos de los mejores dibujantes de la época. Lorca lo retrató como un joven moderno y dinámico, interesado por el teatro, el cine y los deportes, que ya había trabajado en el mítico Hollywood de los pioneros. Para nuestro autor, estos 'felices veinte', época de su 'bohemia protegida', fueron los años de periodista, narrador y tertuliano, en los que entablaría relación con el resto de los escritores que él mismo denominó después "la otra generación del 27". En sus cuentos más afortunados, como "¡Si yo fuera un ladrón!..." o "En la verbena se pierde todo", lo inverosímil casi se vuelve un fetiche mágico.
