El 27 de diciembre de 1831, partió del puerto de Davenport (Inglaterra), con destino a América del Sur, en el HMS Beagle. A bordo del luego famosísimo barco iba un joven de veintidós años que acababa de concluir sus estudios de Teología en la Universidad de Cambridge. Era Charles Darwin. Este libro da cuenta de esa expedición, que duró cinco años y fue decisiva en la carrera del padre de la teoría de la evolución, pero también del marco histórico y cultural en el que se desarrolló.
