Sam y Ed disfrutan de la buena vida. Ed es editor de una revista de arte italiana y Sam es un quiropráctico de éxito. Pese al amor que se profesan mutuamente, no sienten el más mínimo deseo de conocer los gozosos secretos de la paternidad. Sin embargo, cuando la madre de Scot, un chiquillo de once años, muere de repente, la pareja decide cumplir una promesa realizada años atrás en un velada amenizada por el alcohol. Poniéndose manos a la obra, hacen todo cuanto está en su mano para mentalizarse y preparar su casa para la llegada de Scot.
