La dicotomía emic / etic fue propuesta por Pike en 1945 y difundida por Harris en los setenta. Harris distorsionó las tesis de Pike y es el responsable de la versión canónica que se ha impuesto en Antropología: la visión emic de una cultura sería la propia de los nativos y la visión etic la que adquiere el antropólogo desde el bagaje de su disciplina. La tesis fundamental de este ensayo es que la dicotomía emic / etic no puede sostenerse ya que es metodológicamente errónea porque, en Antropología, los quehaceres interpretativos y explicativos son indisociables.
