La leyenda judía del “Golem” es precursora de los futuros mitos sobre creaciones monstruosas llevadas a cabo por los seres humanos en aras a competir con el Creador, fracasadas por nuestra soberbia. Concretada en Praga en el S. XIV, recuerda la narración del Génesis, insuflando vida Yavéh a una figura moldeada en barro a través de ciertas palabras mágicas. Gustav Meyrink (1868-1932) construyó con dicha leyenda un relato fascinante que encarna su protagonista Atanasius Pernath en el barrio judío de Praga, envuelto en el misterio, y la posibilidad del desdoblamiento de la personalidad en una atmósfera inquietante que entra de lleno en los misterios del inconsciente humano y que recuerda el casi contemporáneo mundo kafkiano.
