Aparecido por primera vez en 1968 en la revista La Garrapata, El hombre de negro es uno de los personajes más importantes de la caricatura en México, no sólo por su crítica corrosiva hacia un gobierno represor y corrupto, sino también por su estética alternativa de humor, en la que el peso se ha desplazado de los diálogos a las imágenes, lo cual implica la complicidad del lector. Sobre el personaje de Helio Flores, Rius dice: "es como un testigo dentro de la historieta: semimudo, pesado, temible, complicado, tímido, hasta huidizo. Es un enigma, en definitiva, porque no se sabe qué esperar de él".
