En 1614, un año antes de publicarse la segunda parte del Quijote de Cervantes, aparece el libro tituladp “Segundo tomo del Ingenioso Hidalgo don Quijote de la Mancha, compuesto por el licenciado Alonso Fernández de Avellaneda, natural de la villa de Tordesillas”. Se narran en él nuevas y fantásticas aventuras de don Quijote y Sancho, viéndose aquél recluido en la casa de locos de Toledo. Avellaneda, con evidente traza, remeda el estilo y la técnica de Cervantes, pero ello no rebaja su originalidad. La personalidad del autor que se esconde bajo el seudónimo de Avellaneda constituye uno de los mayores enigmas de la literatura española, existiendo numerosas teorías al respecto, sin que ninguna haya podido prevalecer.
