Uno de los obstáculos con que se tropieza para definir el psicoanálisis en términos epistemológicos es, en opinión de Lorenzer, el profundo abismo que separa la estructura conceptual de esta disciplina y su práctica. Al desarrollarse, el psicoanálisis ha ido conformando un lenguaje técnico peculiar, que adquiere a veces tal especificidad que llega al "congelamiento" de sus términos. Aparece así como un lenguaje aislado, cuyos conceptos están divorciados de los de otras ciencias; es preciso reconvertir ese lenguaje técnico en lenguaje usual captando en profundidad la praxis psicoanalítica.
