En esta obra Carlo Sini reconstruye la historia común de aquellos pensadores americanos que, a finales del siglo pasado, crearon el clima intelectual adecuado para que viera la luz el pragmatismo como sistema filosófico. Esta doctrina es analizada en su doble vertiente: las tesis de James, que obtuvieron inmediatamente reconocimiento internacional, y las de Peirce, más oscuras, pero, al tiempo, muchísimo más interesantes. Además, el autor expone su propia propuesta interpretativa tratando de recuperar el legado de Peirce como una tercera vía frente al positivismo y el mero relativismo.
