Set in London shortly after World War II, this dark psychological novel is as eerily chilling as it is profound. The narrator, Richard Merton, tells the story of his close friend Tony and how he progressively falls under the influence of his new and sinister butler, Barrett. After breaking all ties to his previous life and to his friends, Tony soon appears to be completely dominated by this new, sinister character. Merton's attempts to unravel the mystery uncover a strange affair in which class and sexual barriers have completely disappeared.
