El presente volumen recoge doce textos sobre tópicos muy diversos unidos por el hilo conductor de la enemistad y el odio, y en los que se profundiza en el significado de términos latinos como inimicitia y odium, hostilitas (ira, discordia), excandescentia (dolor), inuidia (antipatía) y liuor (envidia, celos), y también griegos, como mîsos (odio), orgé (cólera), mênis (ira) y phtónos (envidia, celos). Se aborda, entre otros temas, el importante papel de la lengua como elemento diferenciador en la Antigüedad, la rivalidad política como motor excluyente de la ciudadanía en la tardía República, la dicotomía del «ellos o nosotros» y el odio como causa de la guerra, y se analizan las fuentes literarias que construyen un perfil emocional estereotipado del esclavo.
