Este libro cuenta la historia que desemboca en la voladura y el hundimiento en aguas del Río de la Plata en diciembre de 1939 del panzerschiff ("acorazado de bolsillo") Admiral Graf Spee y el suicidio de su capitán, Hans Langsdorff, tras el desembarco de sus marinos en Buenos Aires.

Con eje en ese episodio conocido como la "batalla del Río de la Plata", Yofre somete a un examen profundo y minucioso a la historia argentina que va del golpe de Uriburu a la llegada del peronismo, en el marco de la transformación de Occidente entre el ascenso del nazismo y el fin de la Segunda Guerra.

Con base en documentos inéditos (el archivo de Eduardo Labougle, embajador argentino en Berlín entre 1932 y 1939; el informe del capitán de fragata Eduardo Aumann sobre su conversación con Langsdorff horas antes de su suicidio, y el testimonio de Edmund von Thermann, embajador alemán en Buenos Aires entre 1933 y 1942, a la inteligencia norteamericana), aquí se revela la trama política, militar y diplomática que dio lugar al arribo de los primeros nazis a la Argentina, y el contexto en que se gestaba el final de una época y el nacimiento de otra enteramente diferente.
