Hijo de padres divorciados, fue educado por su madre, amiga de Gustave Flaubert, quien lo incentivó en el camino de la escritura. Su cuento ?Bola de sebo? lo convirtió en un autor famoso llegando a publicar entre 1880 y 1890 entre treinta y cinco libros por año. Se hizo muy rico no obstante llevar una vida alejada de toda relación social. Cayó en la drogadicción, intentó suicidarse y murió loco a los 43 años. Es considerado uno de los más sobresalientes cuentistas del siglo XIX.
