Galdós refleja el palpitar de una época, sus movimientos anímicos, la hipocresía dominante en una burguesía que intenta superar su anquilosamiento en la búsqueda de la modernidad, la religiosidad asfixiante y dominante; y el papel de la mujer en la sociedad de entonces, con Fortunata y Jacinta como máximas exponentes de un diferendo que sigue en plena actualidad.
