Synopsis "Fortunata y Jacinta (in Spanish)"

“But there must be obscurity, just like there has to be death. Without oblivion, there would be no room for new ideas and feelings.”   Fortunata and Jacinta is not only the great model novel of the 19th century, but also a fundamental work in the Spanish cultural legacy.   Jacinta is married to Juanito Santa Cruz, who assures her of a comfortable social position. However, rather than being content with the security of a well-appointed home, she lives tormented by her husband’s infidelities, and as a woman she feels incapable of finding an escape from the golden prison she lives in. One of her husband’s most despised lovers is Fortunata, a working-class woman who, despite her situation, seems to enjoy that which she most longs for. Nevertheless, Fortunata also feels trapped, because her social condition prevents her from pursuing a love that she believes is more genuine than that of the married couple.   This edition is led by siblings María Luisa Sotelo Vázquez and Adolfo Sotelo Vázquez, professors of Spanish literature at the University of Barcelona, whose introductory study and notes bring the reader closer to a world governed by a double standard.
