El «Macizo Hercínico Ibérico» forma la mitad occidental de la Península Ibérica y está constituido por los materiales geológicos que fueron afectados por la Orogenia Hercínica. Este estudio tiene como objeto el contribuir al conocimiento de la evolución del relieve de este antiguo zócalo, para lo cual el profesor Eloy Molina Ballesteros ha utilizado una metodología novedosa de investigación, basada en criterios morfoestructurales, geoquímicos, mineralógicos y micromorfológicos. Esta metodología ha permitido tener una nueva visión respecto al estudio del relieve de esos antiguos zócalos: la Geoquímica del Paisaje.
