Y es que además de su lucidez creativa e intelectual, mantuvo siempre su valentía reflejada en el carácter polémico de sus afirmaciones, en las que no solo le exigía a los periodistas y medios impresos estar a la altura de los desafíos y de los grandes acontecimientos de su época, sino que también confrontó al mundo diplomático, político, literario y cultural, gobernado en aquel entonces casi exclusivamente por hombres: «les debo favores a muchas miles de gentes en todo el mundo. Pero no por eso voy a convertirme en su esclava, ni a perder mi libertad».
