Con seguridad, la figura del príncipe danés no es shakespereana: emerge de una leyenda nórdica de la Alta Edad Media y aparece relacionada en la Historia Dánica por Saxo Grammaticus, erudito danés, en 1514.

El cuentista François Belleforest, en sus Histoires tragiques, obra impresa en 1570, hace la primera adaptación al francés. Sin embargo, el Hamlet histórico no hubiera sobrevivido en la memoria sin el tratamiento artístico de su leyenda; ese príncipe trágico y poético, noble y cruel, lúcido y loco, bello y terrible, nos da indicios del tamaño de nuestra deuda con el genio de William Shakespeare, Cisne de Avon.

Esta es la versión de Leandro Fernández de Moratín, quien comenzó a traducir la obra directamente del inglés estando en la Isla de Wight, durante un viaje por Gran Bretaña en 1792.
