Expulsado del Liceo Louis-le-Grand pese a la obtención del título de Bachiller superior, en 1940 se inscribe en la facultad de derecho. Duramente criticado y vilipendiado en vida por lo escandaloso de su obra y conducta, Baudelaire murió sifilítico y empobrecido, desconocedor del impagable legado que había donado a la posteridad. Adalid del simbolismo, estandarte del romanticismo y precursor del decadentismo, su cuerpo yace enterrado en el Cementerio de Montparnasse.
