Synopsis "health, environment and science education"

environment and health have always been important learning areas in science education and are gradually becoming more important. not only are they socially highly relevant to sustainable development discourses, but also and in particular they are close to students? interests and needs. they can help to open up science to individually relevant questions and improve the commitment to science education of both boys and girls. from the perspective of science education, health and environmental education are two contexts that have many structural similarities. however, this has not yet been appropriately received in the field. more than this, the cultural-historical background of health and environment in science education is quite different. environmental education has been integrated into science education for some decades. in fact, the term stse (science, technology, society, environment) has been coined to label a context-based approach to science education focusing on socio-scientific and ecological issues. where health and science education are concerned, the situation is different. though health issues are recognized as part of many science curricula, there has never been a comparable effort to systematically include health educational contexts in science education. one reason for this may be the cultural gap between the culture of health promotion and the culture of medicine, rooted in the well known cultural clash between natural and social sciences. the recent movement towards health literacy seems to offer an opportunity to work on cultural border crossing, as the importance of bio-medical knowledge for informed decision making on health issues is increasingly appreciated. the core idea of this book is firstly to provide a theoretical framework - based on an analogous operationalization of health and environmental literacy - which underlines the structural similarities between the two issues in science education. on this backdrop, the book secondly seeks to suggest a win-win-situation between health and environmental education on the one hand and science education on the other. thirdly, this will be fleshed out with research results and examples of best practice. applications to the field are discussed, as well as implications for science education and health communication in general.
