Historia como sistema afronta la crisis de la razón occidental y la crítica que de la misma hace nuestro filósofo. Pensar es dialogar con las circunstancias, así emerge la filosofía de Ortega, como manifestación y diagnóstico de la crisis (no sólo de las ciencias o de los fundamentos) alcanzando al modelo de razón y al hombre de la modernidad. Inicia su crítica al racionalismo, al fisicismo y al naturalismo positivista; y a las ideas fetiche de progreso y utopía. Crítica a la modernidad, el hombre desafía su existencia como un drama («desilusionado vivir») y encuentra en la historia misma «su original y autóctona razón». La vida guía a la razón (vital, narrativa, histórica) y la verdad se descubre en la historia. De este modo, la historia es un factor de inteligibilidad, de comprensión y explicación de la realidad.
