Las preguntas que cualquier persona se hace al contemplar un paisaje son las mismas que han acompañado a la humanidad desde sus comienzos. Las respuestas fueron variando con el tiempo, influidas por las cosmologías de cada época. Océanos en retirada, vientos subterráneos, planetas que se arrugan, diluvios y otras explicaciones, con sus errores y aciertos, sirvieron para comprender cada vez un poco mejor los fenómenos de la Tierra y para ir elaborando una teoría coherente.
